We won!

We are delighted to say that we celebrated three big wins at this year’s North East Tourism Awards further securing Northumberland as the North East’s top spot for Tourism.

Ran in partnership with Visit England Awards for Excellence, NGI’s award ceremony proved to be a remarkable celebration for a plethora of venues and businesses within the North East and we were elated to be a part of it!

Joyously walking away with three Gold Awards, CEO Mark Brassell wishes to thank Northumberland and the public’s vital support at a time of global crisis where tourism suffered detrimentally.

Winning the Resilience and Innovation, Experience of the Year and Largest Visitor Attraction Gold Award is a monumental achievement, and we couldn’t be prouder. This kind of success would be impossible to achieve without the help of a staggering amount of people. This includes our hardworking staff, trustees, volunteers, Her Grace The Duchess of Northumberland and of course the public’s unwavering support.

After opening our gates permanently as restrictions lifted last March, celebrating The Poison Garden’s busiest Summer yet and welcoming you all to a dazzling Winter Light Trail, it is an honour to accept the awards on behalf of all our hardworking staff.

There is an immense amount of people we owe these awards to, and we wish we could congratulate each and every one of them. This award is for everyone across site who ensure every day at The Garden is a success.

Congratulations to all nominees, it was a privilege to be named alongside you all! We are looking forward to a great year ahead but for now let’s celebrate! ?

The Sights of Spring

Although Winter doesn’t officially end until March 20th 2022, the sights of Spring in The Garden are already bursting through thanks to the particularly mild February weather.

If you are a planning to visit us soon, here are just some of the blooms you may spot along your way…

Snowdrops Everywhere…

We saw our first Snowdrops of the season back in January and now The Garden is a sea of white. We recommend taking some time by the pond, listening to the ducks and watching the Snowdrops glisten in the sun.

Chimonanthus Praecox…

The Ornamental Garden is putting on a Spring Show and is already showcasing an incredible feast for the eyes and nose! Looking like little drops of sunshine on its long branches, Chimonanthus Praecox is certainly providing light to The Ornamental Garden.

They aren’t just a pretty face however, its sweet scent can be enjoyed from across The Garden, especially on a warm day.

Hidden Primoses…

Harder to spot but currently thriving by the pathway of the Oldest Tree are these bright, white Primroses. If you’re passing by, we recommend keeping an eye out as they are working hard to provide to bit of Spring magic to a Winter Woodland.

Early Iris’…

This English Iris can currently be seen sprouting in patches in all corners of The Ornamental Garden. You can spy them blossoming amongst the Snowdrops and Hellebores, although you may have to get up close and personal to snap the perfect Iris image!

The first Daffodil…

By far the most exciting and involving an element of a treasure hunt! Gardener Amy spotted our first and currently only bright yellow Daffodil. Situated amongst the banks of The Cherry Orchard, it is only making us more excited for Spring.

If you do visit us, make sure to tag us in your pictures! We love to see them and enjoy sharing our favourites

Experience the deadly thrills of The Poison Garden at The Alnwick Garden

The Alnwick Garden plays host to the small but deadly poison garden—filled exclusively with around 100 toxic, intoxicating, and narcotic plants. The boundaries of the poison garden are kept behind black iron gates, only open on guided tours.

Visitors are strictly prohibited from smelling, touching, or tasting any plants, although some people still occasionally faint from inhaling toxic fumes while walking in the garden.
