The Rose Garden

A Symphony of Colour

June and July are the most wonderful times of the year in our Rose Garden. The colours are popping and the aroma is wafting through the air from 3000 highly scented roses.

The Rose Garden

The Alnwick Garden Rose Garden is kindly sponsored by David Austin Roses and has been since 2001.

In late June and early July, The Rose Garden erupts into an abundance of colour and smell that’s a treat for the senses.

Featuring 3000 English shrub roses and climbers, The Rose Garden requires all round care and maintenance from our Gardening Team.

The Alnwick Rose

Created by David Austin roses for The Alnwick Garden and unveiled at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2001.

Bred specifically for The Alnwick Garden, The Alnwick Rose can be found planted in every right angle of each bed. The notes of raspberry can be detected on your journey through The Garden.

You can even try a taste with our very own Alnwick Rose Gin. An exclusive product, there are only a handful left of the limited edition run of 600 bottles.  This can be purchased in our Gift Shop.

The Duchess’s Gate

The Duchess’s Gate is an interactive gate made by local blacksmith Stephen Lunn, his daughter Ashlee and glass artist Helen Grierson. They were installed in 2015 after being two years in the making, weighing 640kg and are in the corner of The Rose Garden which was the original entrance to The Garden before it was redeveloped.

From a distance, it looks pretty and floral, then when you get closer, you can see all the thorns and intricate bits. What makes it more special is that when you walk up to it, you can hear different bird sounds.

Maintenance and Care

In the winter, The Rose Garden is pruned by hand by our Gardening Team and Volunteers. This process lasts from November until February and is vital for The Rose Garden to have the blooms it is known for.

Roses are planted from bare root, in 2023 brand new varieties were added for the first time since 2001. They can been seen in the long border by the Bamboo Labyrinth.

If a certain rose captures your attention, make sure to visit The Plant Centre before you leave to take a bit of The Alnwick Garden home with you!
