On a peaceful slope beyond the Grand Cascade, the Cherry Orchard is planted with hundreds of Taihaku cherry trees. The Taihaku is also known as the great white cherry because of its large white blossom, and The Alnwick Garden is the only place in the UK to see the Taihaku planted in such numbers. Each April or May, the Orchard becomes a beautiful bank of white flowers, with the petals falling like snow.
The trees are underplanted with two hundred thousand pink Mistress tulips, and pathways meander amongst them. Colourful azalea borders are planted at the Orchard’s edge.
Dedicating a cherry tree
Each tree in the Cherry Orchard can be dedicated to a special person, day or event. Some of the trees have already been selected to remember a loved one or mark a wedding day or other memorable occasion. Others have been chosen by those who would like to play their own part in creating a magical landscape for people to enjoy long into the future, in support of The Alnwick Garden Trust. We are very grateful to all our supporters. To find out more, call 01665 511855 or visit the charity pages of the website.
Spring bulb appeal
Another way to support the Cherry Orchard, other than tree sponsorship, is to help us fill it with spring bulbs. Although some of you may have noticed some bulbs this spring, this is only a very small percentage of what we would actually like to plant. Imagine a carpet of one million tulips! This is our aim, and we would like to plant 500,000 this autumn. Click here to support our spring bulb appeal.
The Alnwick Garden Trust, the charity that owns The Garden, is fundraising for The Garden’s third and final phase of development, including the redevelopment of the pond at the foot of the Orchard’s slope. If you can help, click here.
