It is estimated that approximately one third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted each year. In the UK alone, more than 10 million tonnes of food are discarded annually.
Food waste represents a serious environmental and social issue. Methane is produced when food rots impacting upon the environment and climate. Natural resources needed to grow, produce and sell food are also wasted, if the food is not consumed. With an ongoing cost of living crisis and related food insecurity, we are also presented with an ethical problem of discarding perfectly edible food.
The Alnwick Garden continues to open its Community Fridge every week, with 774kg of surplus food prevented from waste during the year.
