THE PHARMACY IN YOUR GARDEN 11am

Until the middle of the 20th century, most drugs prescribed by pharmacies were derived from plants and many have very interesting histories. Although most of these drugs have been replaced by synthetic chemicals, the plants live on and the average garden contains many still used by herbalists. Come and learn what might be lurking in your garden, the stories behind them, and just how poisonous some of these plants are!

PLANTS, MURDER, AND OTHER MYSTERIES 1pm

As a visitor to The Alnwick Garden's Poison Garden, you will know just how deadly plants can be and some novel examples will be presented in this lecture, including state-sponsored murder. More importantly, plants now form part of mainstream forensic science and can be used to identify where and when a person was killed and who killed them as well as the sources of drugs and rare artefacts.

Dr Sandy Primrose is a biologist who is a very keen gardener with experience in many industries including academic research. This enables him to indulge in his love of interesting and unusual plants, plants as drugs and sources of foods, and their role in local traditions.
