In Bloom This Month
The pink, double flowers of Dendranthema rubellum `Anjas Bouquet` shine through shortening days and delphiniums cut to ground in midsummer, continue to bloom on secondary growth. Yellow fruit clusters on Malus `Butterball` are outstanding while curious-shaped fruits on the medlar tree (Mespilus Germanica) are just beginning to rot and are ready for use.

November used to be the time of year when everything was cut back and tidied for the winter, but although there are some tasks that shouldn't be neglected-like raking up leaves to ensure no pests are harboured- we have found a new appreciation of the beauty of seedheads in low winter light. Plants survive better when treated this way and it's good for wildlife.
Use this time of low sap levels to remove dead and dying branches from trees and shrubs, Plant fruit trees and new hedges. Tender shrubs will need protection in the form of fleece or good mulch.
Now is the time to plant Azaleas and Rhododendrons to ensure spring colour in your garden.
In the potting shed pot up lilies of the valley and clean and grease lawnmowers after their active summer of use! The vegetable garden should be ready to yield parsnips, Jerusalem artichokes and horseradish. Open ended cloches over herbs should keep them productive through the winter. |
