In Bloom, August
In Bloom This Month
Now the mixed borders are a riot of colour with the shrubby Lavatera `Candy Floss` and hibiscus prominent. Herbaceous geraniums are a magnet for various species of bumble bee, whose flight paths also take in the distinctive flowers of Rudbeckia `Goldsturm` (yellow) and Scabiosa `Clive Greaves` (violet blue). Assorted cream cultivars of hydrangea are at their frothy best surrounded by Cornus mas, especially Hydrangea paniculata `White Moth.

In the Poison Garden, admire the flowering display of Nicotiana sylvestris (tobacco plant) and Hycoyamus niger (henbane) from a safe distance.

Tips For Your Garden
From Our Gardening Team
If you are going to be away during this holiday month make sure that you move containers into a shady corner and trim back flowering plants to stop them going into seed in your absence.

Ask a neighbour or green fingered friend to water your garden in return for flowers and produce - they'll find it hard to resist seeing how good those tomatoes look!

If you are staying at home August is the month to enjoy the fruits of your labours with the lawn and get the deckchair out.

Pick early apples and summer prune your fruit trees. Yew, laurel and box hedging probably could use a trim now too. You will need to continue spraying roses and fruit.

Now is the time to plant winter lettuce in the salad patch and thinking ahead, don't forget to order your Christmas bulbs!
