In Bloom, April
In Bloom This Month
Peripheral borders in the Ornamental Garden are really awakening now with three favourites; Epimedium x rubrum (crimson/yellow), dog-toothed violets (in many colours) and the pendulous Dicentra Formosa offering great cheer. As if to confirm that summer is just around the corner, magnificent magnolias acuminata subcordata and `Yellowbird` explode into bloom.
Tips For Your Garden
From Our Gardening Team
Spring is at its freshest, spending time in the garden becomes more a matter of choice than a duty as plants respond to the warmer, longer days with vigourous growth. As a gardener it's worthwhile exercising an element of control - staking plants, tidying borders and getting on top of weeds before they have a chance to take hold.
Use those famous April showers to your advantage and plant your evergreens in showery weather. Apply a moisture retaining mulch to your newly tidied borders after rain. On more sunny days the planting of fragrant lavender and box hedges stirs the senses.
This month is a perfect time to plant up your hanging baskets - something to do in the greenhouse or potting shed whilst awaiting the optimum time to get outside to sow asparagus, carrots and salad crops. |
