The Alnwick Garden is a truly unique setting for the most wonderful events. It’s one of the most exciting contemporary gardens in the world; a magical landscape created from unique ideas. The vision of the Duchess of Northumberland and designed by the world-renowned Wirtz International, The Garden mixes eclectic gardens, planting, structures and features, and brings them to life with water. From the world-class contemporary architecture of The Pavilion to the quirky treetop spaces of The Treehouse, The Garden is a special place to hold weddings, parties, dinners, conferences, meetings and exhibitions.
Designed by leading British architect Sir Michael Hopkins, The Pavilion and Visitor Centre is the theatrical entrance to The Garden, with beautiful views of the landscape and the Grand Cascade. The contemporary buildings have been created using a blend of wood, steel and mellow stone, with an exposed structural frame and a high timber barrel-vaulted roof. The Pavilion also features the beautiful 18th century original garden wall, which brings warmth and a sense of The Garden’s rich history.
The bespoke design uses transparent materials and merges indoor and outdoor spaces, with covered and outdoor terraces featuring tiny twinkling lights in the paving. There’s a feeling of light and space, and the understated backdrop and natural palette give the freedom to create any environment from the simplest to the most extravagant.
The buildings have environmentally and technologically enhanced features, including energy from geothermal bore holes, water harvesting and a store of glacial rocks to control temperatures.
High in mature lime trees outside the walls of The Garden is The Treehouse, one of the largest in the world. The Treehouse is so at home in its environment that it appears to have been there for many years, and the experience is nothing if not unusual.
Wooden walkways climb up into the treetops, and across a decked veranda with walkways and bridges leading out into the tree canopy. On the veranda, featuring tables and chairs and The Treehouse bar, is The Treehouse restaurant, a unique and surprisingly spacious structure. When inside, the roaring log fir, soft light and screens of fallen branches, create and other-worldly, magical environment. With distinctive handcrafted furniture and glowing candles, the space is warm and characterful.
