About the feature

Within the Wirtz designed Serpent Garden you will find water sculptures designed by one of the world’s leading water sculptors, William Pye. Using gravity and the natural topography of the land each sculpture shows a different aspect of water – how it looks and moves. The sculptures have been placed around a ‘serpent’ formed from holly.

The sculptures are situated in large beds of yew, giving the impression of being carved out of it.  You will be guided around each feature by yew hedges that allow you to see each sculpture separately.

What you'll experience

Watch the way the water splashes, trickles, flows, clings, waves and reflects…you will never see it the same way twice!

Visitors can walk over a glass platform where water shoots up onto the underside of the glass and walk through canyon and enter waterglass. Enjoy the simplicity of William Pye’s designs matched with the complexity of the movement of the water.

The sculptures will include:

  • Reflection - A trompe d'oeil that creates a ball in a reflective pool.
  • Starburst - Walk on toughened glass with water exploding onto the glass from below.
  • Vortex - A rising and falling water cycle within a circular dish.
  • Coanda - Water clinging to the underside of a beautiful polished bowl.
  • Waterglass - Two unbroken membranes of falling water in a circle that you can enter.
  • Canyon - A pattern of two steel monoliths which you will be able to walk through.
  • Meniscus - Three distinct and contrasting states of water.
  • Torricelli - A celebration of the intrigue of hydrostatic pressure.

The development of this garden has been made possible through the generous support of  The William Leech Foundation who has funded one of these fantastic water sculptures.
