If you can leave the captivating Rose
Garden with its ancient Apothecary's and
Rosa Mundi for a while, do climb the hill,
walk through the arches and be greeted by
giants. Delphiniums over 10 feet tall (`Spindrift`)
cannot be ignored. Also look out for `Gillian
Dallas` (light blue), `Lord Butler` (medium
blue - white eye) and the favourite `Chelsea
Star` (dark blue - white eye).

| Eye catching soft fruits are there to be
found and tasted! There are red and yellow
strawberries and gooseberries, in beds punctuated
by glorious standard roses. A full range of
currants (red, white and black) is fruiting
alongside the curious blackcurrant-gooseberry
hybrid called a jostaberry. |

As high summer approaches your garden will
be thirsty, a water butt is essential with
water becoming an ever more precious resource.
Let established plants search for their own
water by sending down deep roots. Water them
thoroughly only when absolutely necessary
- a quick sprinkle with a watering can has
the adverse effect of encouraging surface
roots and dependence on you! On the other
hand - pots and hanging baskets will need
a daily watering.

| On the secateur front now is the time to
clip privet hedges and prune your fruit trees
and wisteria. Harvest blackcurrants and prune
back to strong new shoots. |
